Vol. 117 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Howth Pier Road.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that the road leading along the west pier at Howth is in a very bad condition; and, if so, whether he will have the road repaired.

The resurfacing of the west pier at Howth is one of a number of works of maintenance which fell into arrear during the emergency.

It will be dealt with when, more pressing works have been completed.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that he cannot blame the emergency for the condition of this road, and that it got into this very bad condition during the past 12 months under his administration and not during the emergency?

I am aware that it has never been the practice for this Government to give the emergency as an excuse for anything. As far as we know, the type of traffic that this roadway is intended to provide for consists mainly of motor lorries which are usually employed in the months of June and July for the transport of fish. When other works which are more necessary—and there are such which have been left over for years such as this one—have been attended to, we will look after this.

I wish to give notice to the Chair that it is my intention to raise this matter on the Adjournment, due to the unsatisfactory nature of the answer which I have received.
