Vol. 117 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Communist Activities.

asked the Minister for Justice if in conformity with the recent condemnation by the Holy See of Communism the Minister will consider the advisability of taking steps to secure that in the Republic of Ireland any Communistic activities threatening to undermine the principles and practices of Christian conduct shall be immediately suppressed.

As I stated in reply to a question by Deputy Cogan on 15th June, there is, as far as I am aware, no organisation in the State which proclaims itself Communist or is associated with the Cominform.

While there are a few small organisations which appear to have Communist tendencies, the activities of those organisations do not appear to contravene the law, and the Deputy will appreciate, that whatever may be the ultimate aims of organisations or individuals, I have no right to interfere with them unless their activities are unlawful.
