Vol. 118 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Promotion of Barley and Wheat Production.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether, in view of the necessity for avoiding imports from the dollar area, special measures will be adopted to promote increased home production of barley and wheat in the coming year and to reduce wheat and maize imports.

Growers are at present guaranteed a price of 62/6 per barrel for milling wheat of top quality. I am satisfied that this price is sufficiently high to ensure that the bulk of our wheat requirements will be produced at home.

I have already advocated the growing for feeding of short-strawed barleys, which are suitable for cultivation even on rich soils, and which give better yields than malting type barleys. I shall continue to give every encouragement to growers to produce this type of barley.

Can the Minister state if ample quantities of this feeding barley for seed will be available at a reasonable price?
