Vol. 118 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Accommodation for Tourists at Cobh.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will now indicate the recommendations of the departmental conference, held at Cobh, following on Colonel Pozzi's criticism of the lack of accommodation for tourists and others landing at Cobh and whether, in view of the admitted importance of the tourist traffic, he will now see that these recommendations are implemented without further delay.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that a greater number of American tourists entered this country through Cork Harbour during the years 1948 and 1949 than came through the airports; and, if so, whether he will make a grant for the improvement of the harbour.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 46 and 47 together. I am aware of the importance of Cobh Harbour to the tourist traffic and also of the fact that the provisions made there for handling passenger traffic are unsatisfactory. I have had a special report made to me on these conditions, as a result of an inspection carried out by representatives of Departments and other organisations immediately concerned. The steps that it may be necessary to take arising out of that report are at present under consideration. I regret that I cannot undertake to disclose the contents of the report.

Will the Minister give an undertaking that something will be done before the tourist traffic starts next year?

I can assure the Deputy there will be no delay that can be avoided.
