Vol. 118 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Medical Examinations.

asked the Minister for Health whether, in view of the fact that a considerable number of people are so debilitated and crippled as to be unable to attend at the various clinics for examination by county ophthalmologists, he will make provision for such examination in their homes.

I am considering measures for an improvement of the health services including the ophthalmological services operated by local authorities. Conferences have taken place with county managers and chief medical officers on this matter, at which the appointment of whole-time specialists was urged. The various local authorities are now considering my suggestions.

The Deputy will agree that there is a difference of opinion as to whether it is better to arrange for the transport of patients to a central clinic for examination and treatment or to arrange for examination of patients in their homes. Probably a combination of both methods would provide the best solution. This is one of the matters to which I am devoting my attention.

The Minister will appreciate that I am referring solely to those who are unable even to be transported.

I shall bear the Deputy's representations in mind when we are further considering the whole matter.
