Vol. 118 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Reclamation Schemes.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether any instructions have been issued to employment exchanges regarding employment on land reclamation schemes; and, if so, whether he will state what these instructions are, and what are the conditions of employment on these schemes.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. The conditions of employment on these schemes are not the concern of my Department.

May I ask the Minister whether cognisance is taken, in the allocation of men for employment by the local employment exchanges, of the type of work which they generally follow and the suitability of the schemes to which they are being sent, and, furthermore, whether any instructions have been sent to remove from the lists for unemployment assistance workers who fail to comply with certain instructions?

I have explained to the Deputy that no instructions have been issued to employment exchanges regarding employment on land reclamation schemes and that the conditions of employment on these schemes are not the concern of my Department but the concern of the Department operating the scheme, namely, the Department of Agriculture. If the Deputy wants any further information as to the method of selection of people for these schemes, perhaps he will put down a question and I shall be only too pleased to let him have all the information in my possession.
