Vol. 118 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Utilisation of Kerry Bogs.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that there are thousands of tons of surplus turf available in the bogs at Ballinskelligs and Portmagee; and, if so, whether he will consider the establishment of a turf-generating station in these areas.

The areas mentioned are in the remote south-west region of Kerry and I am advised by the Electricity Supply Board that there is no major load in this area which would warrant the building of a power station. If a power station was built in this region, heavy and expensive transmission lines would have to be erected to bring the electricity generated to the main load centres. The board have informed me that a power station project in this area could not be recommended at the present stage of development.
