Vol. 118 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of Goods Transport.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he can state what are the average costs per ton mile of the transport of goods by rail and by road as evidenced by the freight charges of Córas Iompair Éireann.

The average receipts from rail traffic, excluding live stock, carried by Córas Iompair Éireann in the year 1948 were estimated at 3.55 pence per ton mile. The corresponding figures for road traffic are not available. The preparation of figures on a ton mile basis for road traffic would involve a great deal of work, having regard to the relatively shorter distances goods are carried and the number of small consignments involved.
