Vol. 118 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Protection against Exploitation.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in order to provide protection for the public against undue exploitation, particularly during the approaching Christmas season, he will, while allowing reasonable profits, take steps to counter the influence of certain rings operating in the commercial activities of the Republic, which, through inordinate profiteering, are responsible for the high cost of living.

The prices of all essential commodities are at present controlled either directly by way of a maximum price Order or indirectly by agreement with the trade interests concerned. I am not aware that there is any danger that the public will be exploited through the charging of excessive prices for essential commodities during the Christmas season and I have no information in regard to the commercial rings to which the Deputy refers. If the Deputy will furnish me with particulars of the cases he has in mind, I will be glad to give the matter further consideration.

Does that refer to eggs also?
