Vol. 118 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Pensions.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that ex-Sergeant William Callaghan (Department of Defence Reference No. 37/SP/163) who was married during his service in the Defence Forces and was married at the date of his discharge, has been refused a married, pension; and, if so, whether he will take the necessary steps to see that a married pension is paid to this man at once.

I am aware that ex-Sergeant William Callaghan has not been awarded a married pension under the Defence Forces (pensions) schemes because of the fact that marriage allowance was not payable to him at the date of his discharge.

I have no power under the provisions of the scheme to grant him a married pension.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state (a) the numbers of officers and other ranks granted Army service pensions under the Defence Forces (Pensions) Scheme, 1937, whose pensions have been reduced under the provisions of Article 38 of that scheme by reason of their being awarded disablement pensions under the Army Pensions Acts, 1923-49; and (b) whether he intends to arrange for the amendment of Article 38 of the scheme so as to allow payment of service pensions at the full rate to these officers and other ranks.

The numbers of officers and other ranks, under Defence Forces (Pensions) Scheme, 1937, whose pensions have been reduced owing to their having been awarded disablement pensions are four and 49, respectively.

The matter referred to at (b) in the Deputy's question is receiving consideration.
