Vol. 118 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tinned Food Prices.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the greatly varying prices charged for tinned and bottled foods, sauces, salad creams and condiments, he will take such steps as are necessary to ensure uniformity of price, and to prevent the continuance of profiteering in respect of these commodities.

The prices of some tinned and bottled foodstuffs are controlled, either directly by Order fixing maximum retail prices or indirectly by arrangement with the manufacturers or importers. I do not consider there is sufficient justification for imposing the control in those cases to which it does not at present apply, or that it would be desirable to bring about uniformity of price. As long as the demand in the different varieties and qualities is being met, the charging of varying prices may be taken to indicate the existence of competitive conditions in the retail trade, which should be a check on any tendency to take excessive profits.
