Vol. 118 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wages in Industrial School.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that the carpenter, shoemaker, tailor and engineer who are employed in Clonmel Industrial School, are very dissatisfied with their present low weekly wages of £3 16s. 0d. each for the shoemaker, tailor and engineer, and £4 8s. 8d. for the carpenter; and, if so, whether he will take steps to have these wages increased, particularly in view of the fact that the builders' labourers in Clonmel are paid £4 18s. 0d. per week.

Industrial schools are voluntary institutions privately owned. The rate of remuneration paid to tradesmen and all other employees, is a matter for which the school authorities are solely responsible. Questions affecting their remuneration and conditions of employment are matters for arrangement between the school authorities and the employees concerned.
