Vol. 118 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition and Division of Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Land Commission have decided to acquire the estate of Miss Bridget Nolan, Gragadder and Rosetown, Kilcock, County Kildare.

The answer is in the affirmative.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what steps have been taken to acquire the farm of Mrs. Kelly, Churchfield, Knock, Claremorris, County Mayo, for the relief of local congestion.

The Land Commission considered the acquisition of these lands but, as a result of their investigation, they decided not to acquire them.

I would like to point out to the Minister that this farm is in a very congested area and if it were acquired it would help considerably to relieve that congestion. I do not see any reason why the Land Commission should not decide to acquire this holding.

The Land Commission are well aware of the congestion in that locality and they are taking steps to relieve it.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what steps have been taken by the Land Commission to acquire the non-residential farm of Mr. Frank Clarke, Carramarley, Claremorris, County Mayo, for distribution amongst local small holders.

The Land Commission considered the question of the acquisition of these lands and as a result of their investigations they decided not to acquire them.

I would like to bring to the Minister's notice that this farm was first inspected by the Land Commission about 11 years ago. In that locality there are numbers of small farmers under £10 valuation. Nobody has lived on that particular farm for the past 15 or 16 years, and I see no reason why it should not be taken over. I hope the Minister will reconsider it.

Very good.

Does the Minister undertake to do that?

Is the Deputy interested in the question?

I am interested in knowing whether or not the Minister has given a pledge to Deputy Commons.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission intend to acquire for distribution the lands of the late Mr. George Greer, of Leaffoney, Milglass, County Sligo (Duke estate), in view of the fact that acute congestion exists in this area, and that small farmers in the neighbourhood have had these lands in conacre for a number of years.

The Land Commission considered acquiring these lands, but as a result of their investigations, they decided not to acquire them.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that there has been agitation for many years to have the Cowan estate at Coolnacarrick, Ballinagh, County Cavan, divided among uneconomic holders in the area; and, if so, whether he will state what steps have been taken by the Land Commission in the matter.

The Land Commission have decided to institute proceedings for the acquisition of these lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether it is proposed to distribute in the coming year the estate of the Representative Body of the Church of Ireland, formerly Rotheram, and known as Bellview, Knockrath and Patrickstown.

It is impossible to forecast when these lands will be allotted but it is unlikely that the Land Commission will be in a position to allot them in the coming year.
