Vol. 118 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Minane Bridge Reclamation Scheme.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is prepared to include the Minane Bridge area, Carrigaline, County Cork, in the land reclamation scheme in view of the delay likely to take place in that area in connection with arterial drainage.

This matter has been engaging the attention of the Department of Lands and the Deputy will recall the reply given by the Minister for Lands to Deputy P.D. Lehane's question on the subject on the 9th November. In the light of the reply of the Minister for Lands on that occasion it would be inappropriate for another Department to intervene as suggested in the Deputy's question.

Considering the fact that through the various technical and engineering difficulties connected with the arterial drainage scheme—which, in itself, may mean a long time before it is carried out—and also the danger of many more acres of land being flooded within the coming 12 months, would it not be worth while having this matter reconsidered by the Department in case more land should be wasted?

As the Deputy is probably aware, the Minister for Lands explained in the Dáil on the 9th November that this matter was being investigated and that although difficulties had been encountered the investigations were still being pursued. Until these investigations are completed, it would not be appropriate for another Department to intervene.

May I ask, further, whether it would not be possible for the Department of Lands to prepare, in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, the preliminary scheme, at least, so that if it should happen that there is going to be a delay they can bring the scheme into operation at short notice?

I shall have that suggestion examined.
