Vol. 118 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Erection of County Limerick Bridges.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware of the necessity for erecting a bridge over the Oulagh river for the purpose of facilitating the users of a road leading from a point near Knockuasna school, Abbeyfeale, to the main Abbeyfeale-Athea road; and, if so, whether he will have this bridge erected as soon as possible.

I understand that there is a footbridge at the point indicated by the Deputy and that it is maintainable by the Limerick County Council. In the circumstances, the question of improved transport facilities would, presumably, be one for that council.

I should explain that I have no responsibility for the provision of bridges as such, except to the extent to which they may form suitable subjects for the relief of unemployment or can be brought within the rural improvements scheme, towards the cost of which the benefiting landholders would have to subscribe.

asked the Minister for Finance (1) whether proposals have been submitted to his Department in regard to the erection of a bridge over a stream which crosses the road leading from the townland of Tullyoline south on to the main Templeglantine-Abbeyfeale road at Inchabaun; and (2) whether he is aware that a bridge at this point would give much relief, particularly during the winter, to the users of this road; and whether in the circumstances he will take steps to have the work put in hands.

I have already had this case examined, and I regret I cannot make a grant from the funds at my disposal as the cost of the proposed work would be excessive in relation to its utility.
