Vol. 118 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - The Social Welfare Act,1948.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state in respect of each county the additional annual amounts payable as a result of the Social Welfare Act, 1948, to old age pensioners and recipients of non-contributory pensions under the Widows' and Orphans' Pension Acts.

The weekly value of all pensions in payment under the Old Age Pensions Acts at 30th September, 1949, was £132,815, as against £95,911 (including cash supplements) at the end of September, 1948. This represents an increase of £36,904 per week, or £1,919,008 per year of 52 weeks.

Statistics, by counties, as to numbers and rates of old age pensions are compiled only once in each year, as at the last Friday in December. The latest figures now available for such pensions, by counties, are those for Friday, 31st December,1948, which was the last Friday before the amendments introduced by the Social Welfare Act, 1948, came into effect. Data for these statistics have to be obtained from 171 social welfare officers throughout the country, and then analysed and collated at headquarters. As the work of compiling the returns for Friday, 30th December, 1949, is so close at hand I trust the Deputy will agree to await the information they will reveal.

It is estimated that as a result of the Social Welfare Act, 1948, an additional amount of £501,083 will be paid to non-contributory pensioners under the Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Acts during the current year.

The estimated additional amounts to be paid in each county borough and county are set out in a statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to have circulated with the Official Report.
