Vol. 118 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Establishment of Bicycle Industry.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether any proposal has been submitted to the Industrial Development Authority relative to the establishment of a bicycle manufacturing industry in this country; and, if so, what decision has been reached in the matter.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. The matter is still under consideration.

Is the Minister aware that this matter was under consideration by his Department and by the Government for a long period prior to its submission to the Industrial Development Authority? Is he aware that there was in existence up to 1942 a protective tariff? Is he further aware that there are a number of men out of employment because of the failure to reimpose the duties that formerly existed?

I am aware of what the Deputy says and I do not want to make any comment on it at the moment.
