Vol. 118 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Statistics.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the number of persons at present in receipt of unemployment assistance at Mallow, County Cork, employment exchange.

The number of persons registered at the local office of my Department at Mallow in receipt of unemployment assistance on the 1st December, 1949, was 25.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the number of unemployed registered in the Balbriggan employment exchange at the end of November, 1949.

The number of persons registered at the local office of my Department at Balbriggan on Saturday, the 26th November, 1949, was 107.

Is the Minister aware that this is the first year since I was elected that there was no grant made for Balbriggan notwithstanding that he is a member of the Labour Party?

That is a separate question.

I wish to protest on behalf of the unemployed in Balbriggan——

The Deputy asked a question and got an answer.

I wish to protest——

The Deputy will resume his seat. He put down a question about the number of unemployed and got an answer. The Deputy cannot proceed now to debate something else.

Arising out of the Tánaiste's reply, is he aware that were it not for the action of Deputy Burke and others of his Party, during the passage of the Local Authorities (Works) Bill in this House——

That has nothing to do with this.

Deputy Dunne is sabotaging the issue.

Deputy Burke will sit down.

I am here protesting——

I am protesting——

Deputy Burke will leave the House now.

I will leave the House after I have made an honest protest on behalf of the unemployed in Balbriggan.

Deputy Burke withdrew from the Chamber.

I think the Chair should have taken notice of Deputy Dunne's supplementary question, which appeared to be disorderly.

The Chair did. Deputy Dunne's question was quite out of order, but Deputy Dunne did not defy the Chair.
