Vol. 118 No. 14

Written Answers. - Great Northern Railway Employees.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that a large number of Great Northern Railway employees have been laid off recently; and, if so, whether he will take steps to protect the interests of these workers.

I have been keeping in close touch with the Great Northern Railway Company as I have been concerned to secure that the company would take no precipitate action in regard to reductions of staff. They have assured me that they are equally concerned to avoid dismissals in so far as their resources will permit. They inform me that they have had to dispense with the services of some staff, but that this has been largely as a result of seasonal redundancy.
