Vol. 118 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state (a) the reason for the delay in starting work on the building of new schools at Inch, Killeagh, and at Shanagarry, and (b) what steps he intends taking to provide flush lavatories in Ballycotton schools where there are at present no sanitary arrangements.

With regard to the first part of the Deputy's question, I assume that the school at Shanagarry to which the Deputy refers is Kilmahon National School, in the townland of Shanagarry.

Considerable difficulty was experienced in obtaining satisfactory sites for new schools to replace this school and Inch National School, Killeagh. The managers have, however, now succeeded in obtaining sites which are regarded as suitable, and the Department is in correspondence with them relative to certain preliminary arrangements which have still to be made before grants can be sanctioned from State funds towards the cost of the new buildings.

With regard to the second part of the Deputy's question, the Department has not received any representations for the provision of a water-flushed system of sanitation at Ballycotton National Schools but I am having investigations made.
