Vol. 119 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Minane Bridge Reclamation Scheme.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he will state what progress has been made with the Minane Bridge reclamation scheme since November last, and the number of hours devoted by the staff of his Department to the project during the period referred to above.

In the course of an adjournment debate last year, I explained fully the difficulties presented by this project. The Land Commission are faced with the problem of erecting a substantial tidal barrage on what I might describe as a mud flat. If there were a rock foundation for the barrage there would be no problem, but, unfortunately, the site is composed of soft clay underlying a layer of sand. The barrage would be subject to tidal action and the weight of the barrage itself would also exert considerable pressure, so a proper foundation would be a prime necessity. Naturally, the Land Commission cannot be expected to embark on such a project until they are quite satisfied that it would be a complete success.

I know the Deputy is anxious to see this work put in hands. I am equally anxious about it, as I wish to ensure that no further damage will be caused to the land and buildings in the area.

May I point out that the Minister has not answered the question?
