Vol. 119 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bantry Bacon Factory.

Mr. Collins

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he can give any information regarding the possible completion of the building of Bantry bacon factory.

I informed the promoters last January that I would be prepared to give a licence for the operation of a bacon factory in Bantry.

I cannot say when the factory will be completed. This is entirely a matter for the promoters.

In view of a certain amount of local discontent and uneasiness in the Bantry area, would the Minister inquire if there is any possibility of the factory ever being built, so that it will not remain the election stunt that it was?

The Deputy will realise that it is purely a matter for those who propose to invest their capital in it. This is certain, that if there is capital available and a responsible management, there is no difficulty about providing the promoters with the necessary licence.

Did the Minister say that he was prepared to give a licence for the operation of a factory in Bantry or in Bandon?

I said that I informed the promoters last January that I would be prepared to issue a licence for the operation of a factory in Bantry.

In view of the fact that Deputy Collins has described the venture as an election stunt, could the Minister indicate, in order to clear the minds of the people in this particular area, that it is not an election stunt?

That is a separate question. May I again draw attention to the rule that Ministers and Deputies should address the Chair? One reason for it is that it makes it more objective.

If I may say with respect, Sir, your apprehensions need not be so grave when I am addressing Deputies to the back of me. Their feelings are not so tender.

I am just drawing attention to a rule of order.
