Vol. 120 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Dublin Man's Arrest.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware that a resident of Dublin was arrested by members of the Gardaí on the 20th March, 1950; that he was detained from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the Bridewell; if he is further aware that members of the Gardaí called to his place of employment while he was in custody and that this action might have resulted in his losing his employment; and if he will state the grounds for this man's arrest and detention and the justification or authority for the call by Gardaí officers to his place of employment.

I have made inquiries into this case and I am satisfied that the Garda had reasonable cause for suspecting that the man referred to had taken part in the armed robbery of Drumcondra Post Office on 11th March, and that in the circumstances their action was warranted.

Is the Minister satisfied now that the man concerned had no connection with that particular offence?

We are satisfied that the Guards were within their rights in investigating the matter through his employer. The information obtained as to his whereabouts cleared the man of any suspicion in connection with this robbery.
