Vol. 120 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - County Limerick Houses.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether the Limerick County Council has made any proposals to his Department for the erection of further houses in Dromcollogher; and, if so, if he will state the present position in regard to these proposals.

No recent proposals have been submitted by the Limerick County Council in regard to the provision of houses at Dromcollogher. The council's housing programme for the period ending 31st March, 1952, lists a proposal for the erection of eight houses in this town.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state what progress is being made in the provision of houses in Ardagh village, County Limerick.

No proposals for a housing scheme in Ardagh have yet been submitted to my Department by the Limerick County Council. I understand that, according to a survey carried out early this year, the housing needs are six new houses and that the council are taking steps to secure sites in the area.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether the Limerick County Council has submitted proposals to his Department for a housing scheme in Askeaton; and, if so, what is the present position in regard to this matter.

No proposals for a housing scheme at Askeaton have within recent times been submitted to my Department by the Limerick County Council. I understand that the council are negotiating for the purchase of a site in the area.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that there is still an acute shortage of houses in the town of Rathkeale, and if he will state whether any steps are being taken, or considered, for a further housing scheme for the town to provide for the very deserving applicants who failed to secure houses in the scheme completed last year.

I am not aware that there is still an acute shortage of houses in Rathkeale. I understand that for the 28 houses completed by the council last year 65 applications for tenancies were received and that the majority of the unsuccessful applicants were originally considered by the local authority to be ineligible for rehousing in the town or did not proceed with their applications when tenants were being selected.

The provision of further houses in the town is a matter for consideration by the local authority in the first instance in the light of the needs of the area.
