Vol. 120 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Working of County Cavan Bog.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that there is an almost unlimited market for the turf produced in Altbrian bog, County Cavan, and whether, in view of the large number of unemployed in the area, he will make arrangements to have this bog brought back into production as soon as possible.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that while there was a ready sale for turf produced on Altbrian bog, the isolated position of this bog in relation to the other bogs worked under the special production scheme involved servicing and supervision costs which were disproportionate to the output and which made production wholly uneconomic. Bord na Móna further advise me that the harvesting of turf on this bog is uncertain, owing to its elevation.

The maximum number of men employed on Altbrian bog in 1949 was 52. Alternative employment on permanent schemes operated by the board has been offered to those men who were employed on the bog at the time the decision was taken to cease production and a considerable number of bog workers is still required on these permanent schemes where hostel accommodation is available.
