Dáil Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 24 May 1950

Vol. 121 No. 4

Sittings of Dáil.

Business will be taken in the following order:—No. 8 and No. 7 (Votes 54, 55 and 12). It is not proposed that the consideration of Government Business be interrupted to-day at the time fixed for taking Private Deputies' Business.

Will the Dáil sit next Tuesday?

Yes. I understand there have been discussions between the Whips on the subject of meeting on Thursdays at 10.30 a.m. and continuing until 5 p.m. It might be appropriate if a decision were taken on that matter now. So far as we are concerned, we will be agreeable to any course of action which the House approves of.

That will be from to-morrow morning?

Yes, from to-morrow morning.

Resolved: That, notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained in Standing Orders and until further resolved, the Dáil shall meet on Thursdays at 10.30 a.m. and that the order for the Adjournment on those days shall be taken not later than 5 p.m.

Might I ask the Taoiseach if he can give any information to the Dáil as to the possibility of Private Deputies' Business being taken in the near or immediate future?

I can give the most positive assurance that neither in the near nor immediate future will any Private Deputies' Business be taken, because we are all anxious to get away as early as possible and there is a large amount of business to be disposed of.

I urge on the Taoiseach this consideration: that motion No. 20 on the last list of private Deputies' motions in the name of Deputy Fitzpatrick and myself is directed to affording the right of audience in one or other of the Houses of the Oireachtas to the elected representatives of the people in the Six Counties, and in the light of the views expressed by some of these——

That must not be debated now.

——will the Government consider giving an early time for the consideration of the matter?

No; it will have to take its place in the queue.

I should like to ask when we are going to have the Second Stage of the Agricultural Workers (Holidays) Bill?

I do not know.

Will the Taoiseach indicate it to-morrow?

No, because I cannot say from day to day how the business goes.

I should like to urge the Taoiseach to have this Bill implemented during the present Session.

There are several other Bills and matters which have to be dealt with.

This Bill has been hanging fire since last year.

It must not be debated now.
