Vol. 121 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Postal Services.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he will arrange to provide a daily postal service in the large area around Headford, County Galway, including the townlands of Liss, Cluneen, Cloughanover, Crosswood, Kilkeel, Mount Ross, Windfort, Ballyhale, Ballyconlaught, Carnacrow, Loggawinna, Ballinacreg, Rafee, Knocklahard, Culleen, Clydagh, Caltra, Curraghcoogeen, Ballycasey, Skezghbeg, Ballybaun, Ballycorrigeen, Kilcoona, Bridagh, Mausrevaugh and Kilgariff.

It would not be practicable to provide a daily delivery in these districts at present because of the considerable expense which would be entailed. I will have the matter re-examined when the area is surveyed in connection with the general reorganisation of postal services.

Is the Minister aware that there is a daily delivery to Mrs. McDonagh, Ballyhale, who is the clerk of the old age pension committee, and to Captain Morris of Clydagh and that the postman who delivers to both individuals travels through most of the villages referred to in my question? In view of that, I suggest to the Minister that the extra cost of a daily delivery of letters on the route would not be very much, and that he might reconsider his decision to have all that huge area covered by a daily delivery.

I have assured the Deputy that under the reorganisation scheme this, as well as other portions of Galway, will be considered. Already we are giving a six-day delivery in some parts of Galway, but until the reorganisation scheme has been carried out, we cannot do more than we are doing at present for this area. The matter, as I have said, is under consideration.
