Vol. 122 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Pension.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that Mr. James Lynch of Glenbower, Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary, lost his right leg as a result of an injury sustained in 1943 while in Army service, that he was awarded a pension in 1945 of £1 9s. 4d. per week and that in April of last year this pension was increased to £1 13s. 8d. per week; and whether, in view of the inadequacy of a pension of this amount for a young man of 27 years of age, unable to earn a living because of the loss of a leg, he will take steps to ensure that a sufficient pension to enable him to live in reasonable comfort will be paid to him.

I am aware of the case of Mr. James Lynch of the address mentioned. The pension of £1 13s. 8d. per week which is paid to Mr. Lynch is the maximum payable under the Army Pensions Act, 1927, to a person with his disability. I regret that I have no power to increase such pension.
