Vol. 123 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Sewerage Schemes.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that the plans, specification and estimate in connection with the Banteer sewerage scheme were submitted by the Cork Deputy County Engineer to the Cork Assistant County Manager and the Northern Committee of Cork County Council early last June; and, if so, if he will state what steps are being taken to carry out the scheme which is very urgently needed, and, further, if he will state the sources from which the cost of the work will be paid.

The plans, specification and conditions of contract furnished in connection with a sewerage scheme at Banteer have been approved. The submission of a bill of quantities is awaited. Schemes of this nature are at present financed by way of loans and State grants.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware of the necessity for carrying out a water and sewerage scheme in Ballydesmond, County Cork; and, if so, what steps are being taken for the provision of water and sewerage in this important village on the Kerry-Cork border.

A very extensive programme of water supplies and sewerage schemes in the North Cork area was agreed upon in 1948. That programme comprised 31 water supplies and 11 sewerage schemes. Of these 42 schemes which were certified in 1948 as being the most urgent in the area, work has been begun on two water supplies; tenders have been accepted for seven water supplies and two sewerage schemes and tenders have been invited for two further water supplies and two sewerage schemes. Four water supply proposals have been approved but have not yet gone to tender.

Last May the local authority submitted proposals for a large number of schemes additional to the original programme. These include a water supply for Ballydesmond. Since then there has been correspondence between the Department and the local authority with a view to determining the relative urgency of the different schemes. On the 29th ultimo the local authority were requested to furnish information regarding the position in 12 districts where water supplies were originally certified as of primary urgency but in regard to which no proposals have since been furnished and a reply to that inquiry is awaited.
