Vol. 123 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of River Shannon.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state whether moneys provided in this country in connection with Marshall Aid can be used for drainage work; and, if so, if he will consider the provision of funds from this source for the drainage of the River Shannon.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state when it is proposed to carry out the drainage of the River Shannon.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 16 and 17 together.

Before any question of undertaking drainage operations on the River Shannon can be considered, it will be essential to have a very thorough investigation of the possibility of devising a reasonably economic scheme. I am not in a position to say when it may be possible to undertake this investigation. It will be clear from the report of the Drainage Commission that, owing to the physical conditions in the catchment, the possibilities of economic drainage are limited as compared with other catchments on which the available staff is at the moment fully occupied.

The Deputy will, therefore, appreciate that the question whether Marshall Aid counterpart moneys would, or would not, be available is not of immediate relevance.
