Vol. 123 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state when the erection of a new school at Ballagh, Kilrooskey, Roscommon, will be undertaken.

The necessary preliminary arrangements in this case are nearing completion and I hope that it will be possible, at an early date, to sanction a grant from State funds towards the cost of the erection of the new school.

When the grant has been sanctioned, it will be a matter for the Commissioners of Public Works to have working drawings and specification for the new school prepared, with a view to the invitation of tenders. While I am unable to say, at present, when the erection of the new school will be undertaken, there will be no avoidable delay in having the case brought to the stage at which a contract can be placed.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state whether a grant has been sanctioned by his Department for the erection of a new primary school in Glantane, Mallow, County Cork; and, if so, the cause of the delay in proceeding with the building of this much-needed school.

My Department recently sanctioned a grant towards the cost of the erection of new boys' and girls' schools to replace the present Glantane National School. There was no avoidable delay in the completion of the preliminary arrangements which had to be made before the grant was sanctioned.

It is now a matter for the Commissioners of Public Works to have working drawings and a specification for the new schools prepared and to take such other necessary steps as may be required to enable the erection of the building to be proceeded with.
