Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Established and Temporary Civil Servants.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of established civil servants, exclusive of postal officials, in the service of the State in the years 1939, 1948, 1950.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of temporary civil servants, other than postal officials, in the service of the State for the years 1939, 1948, 1950.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle. I propose to take Questions Nos. 59 and 60 together and to have the reply, which is in the form of a tabular statement, circulated with the Official Report. Following is the reply:—

(1) These figures do not include officers of departmental grades serving in the Department of Posts and Telegraphs.

(2) The numbers are those serving at the beginning of each of the years indicated.

(3) The figures in column (3) do not include (a) persons employed on relief schemes; (b) persons employed on a fee basis, and (c) artisans, labourers, etc., employed on schemes or works of a temporary nature (other than relief schemes) who are not regarded as civil servants.
