Vol. 123 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Youghal Tenancy.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware (1) that recently the house, No. 4 Town Walls, Youghal, became vacant and that the usual procedure under the housing (management and letting) regulations was carried out; (2) that the county housing superintendent recommended as tenant a man who has a wife and five children aged from 15 years to five years, all of whom are compelled to sleep in one room even though of different sexes; (3) that a second recommendation was made by the housing superintendent and that the county medical officer of health gave first preference to the second recommendation; (4) that the local urban district council agree that from every point of view the housing superintendent's first preference is the more deserving one, and whether in the circumstances the Minister will ensure that the recommendation of the housing superintendent, as agreed to by the local council, will be strictly adhered to.

The facts of this case were reported to my Department by the urban district council with an expression of their views to the effect indicated in the Deputy's question, but adding that the council appreciated that the letting regulations have been complied with. In the circumstances, it was not open to me to intervene in the matter and the council were so informed. I hope, however, that the applicant to whom the Deputy refers will be accommodated when houses are available from the 44-house scheme now in progress.
