Vol. 123 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Meath Housing.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware of the urgent need for additional housing in the districts of Laytown and Julianstown, County Meath, and if he will state the reason for the delay in acquiring suitable sites in this area for the housing of workers.

To meet the needs of the Laytown and Julianstown districts five cottages are at present in course of construction and provision for the acquisition of sites for a further 38 cottages was made in a compulsory purchase order made by the Meath County Council this year. The acquisition of five of those sites was confirmed in a first confirmation order dated the 26th September, 1950, and one site was rejected as unsuitable. Objections were made to the acquisition of the sites for the remaining 32 cottages and it was necessary therefore to hold public inquiries into the making of the order in so far as it related to those and other opposed sites. The order as a whole is a very large one, relating to various areas in County Meath and necessitating an extensive series of inspections, and quick decisions on the opposed portions have not therefore been possible. There will, however, be no avoidable delay in issuing these decisions.
