Vol. 123 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fuel Importers—Clerical Staff.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that a number of clerks employed by Fuel Importers, Limited, have lost their employment after almost nine years' service and that more are under notice to leave at the end of the year; and, if so, whether he will make arrangements with the Minister for Finance to have the people concerned employed as civil servants in some of the Departments.

I am aware that four clerical workers of Fuel Importers, Limited, have been under tentative notice of termination of employment. I understand, however, that this notice is being withdrawn for the present. I am informed that there is no possibility of absorbing these clerical workers into the Civil Service.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary not consider that the Government should have some responsibility for a number of these clerical workers who gave loyal and faithful service for eight or nine years? Will he not consider giving employment to some of them who were let go during the last few years? I understand now that a few have been dismissed recently, and more are under notice. The Parliamentary Secretary states that there are only four, but my information is different.

The Deputy is no doubt aware that when these people were engaged they were engaged on a temporary basis. A number of people who have become redundant in State companies of this nature have been absorbed into the Civil Service.
