Vol. 123 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cromane Sand Drawing.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will relax the restriction on the drawing of sand from the foreshore at Cromane, County Kerry, so as to enable the local farmers to avail of the sand for manurial purposes.

As a result of complaints made by the tenants of adjoining lands it was decided in 1938 that no licences should be granted authorising the removal of beach material from the foreshore at Cromane. During the past year requests have been made for a reconsideration of this decision on the grounds that it caused hardship to the farmers concerned. On the other hand, a memorial was received from a large number of local people complaining of serious damage to their lands, said to have been caused by unauthorised removals of beach materials. In view of the conflicting interests involved arrangements were made to have an inspection carried out. After consideration of the Inspector's report, it was decided that licences might be granted, on application, to the tenants of the adjoining townlands of Upper and Lower Cromane, Lonart and Tullig More and Beg authorising the removal of fertilizing sand for their own use from certain areas of the southern part of the foreshore.
