Vol. 123 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Strychnine Sales.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state when it is proposed to introduce proposals for fresh legislation governing the sale of strychnine poison.

The sale of strychnine is governed by the Sale of Poisons Act, 1870. This Act makes a distinction between strychnine and strychnine preparations and whilst it provides for strict control of the sale of strychnine as such, I am satisfied that a more effective control of the sale of preparations of strychnine, which include admixtures and solutions of strychnine, is desirable. The question of providing such control by way of an Order to be made by the Government under the Act of 1870 has been receiving attention in my Department. Should it be found impracticable because of legal difficulties to make such an Order, consideration will be given to the introduction of appropriate amending legislation.

Is the Minister aware that a promise in somewhat similar terms was given by him almost two years ago, and also that many unfortunate incidents have occured in the country in the intervening two years?

I can assure the Deputy that there will be no avoidable delay in implementing my undertaking to deal with this matter.
