Vol. 123 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Longford County Hospital.

asked the Minister for Health whether he is aware of the dilapidated condition of the present County Hospital, Longford; and, if so, whether he will ensure that a new hospital is built there at the earliest date; further, if he will indicate his proposals for future hospitalisaction schemes in County Longford.

I am aware of the condition of the present County Hospital, Longford. Provision has been made for the erection of a new 88-bed hospital in the short-term building programme. On the 16th November, 1950, a letter issued to the local authority conveying observations on the diagrammatic sketch plans submitted and a request for estimates of the cost of the alternative schemes proposed. I can assure the Deputy that my Department will deal expeditiously with all matters in connection with the provision of this hospital.

I have urged the local authority to carry out essential works of improvement at the County Home. New sanitary annexes have been provided and steps are being taken to instal modern kitchen equipment. The question of future hospitals schemes in the county will come up for further consideration when the present short-term programme of hospital building is nearing completion.
