Vol. 124 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drift Net Salmon Fishing.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will consider introducing proposals for legislation to amend the Fisheries Acts so as to enable drift net salmon fishermen to fish on Sunday nights during the weekly close season.

Fishing for salmon by any means except rod and line is prohibited by statute law between 6 a.m. on Saturday and 6 a.m. on the following Monday. Investigations as to the movements of salmon in the sea will this year be carried out off the Donegal coast and will be continued for at least two seasons. Until the results of these investigations are known, I cannot undertake to consider proposals for amending legislation as suggested by the Deputy.
