Vol. 124 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turf Development.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware of the necessity for developing large areas of turbary at Caherciveen, Portmagee, Ballinskelligs, Foilmore, Scrahanfada and Lisbabe (near Baraduff); and, if so, whether he will arrange for Bord na Móna to operate turf-cutting machines in these areas at the earliest possible date.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that under its programme for the year 1951 it is proposed to operate semi-automatic machines at Caher bog, near Caherciveen, and at Portmagee, South Kerry. From the board's experience of previous years it is satisfied that it could not expect to procure sufficient labour to meet its requirements if it were to undertake turf production in the other areas mentioned by the Deputy.
