Vol. 124 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Admission to Seamen's Union.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he will recommend to the Irish Seamen and Port Workers' Union that all young citizens of the State who wish to join the mercantile marine should be admitted to their union.

I have no information as to whether the Irish Seamen and Port Workers' Union is being unreasonable in its attitude towards the admission of new members. In any event the selection of persons for membership of a trade union is one for decision by the union itself and I have no power to intervene in the matter.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that a number of unemployed fishermen are most anxious to join the Irish Mercantile Marine Services but are debarred from doing so through their inability to obtain admission to the Seamen's Union. Will the Parliamentary Secretary make representations to the union for the purpose of having them admitted?

If the Deputy will furnish me with particulars, I will refer the matter to the union.
