Vol. 124 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Bridge at Gweebarra.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has satisfied himself that adequate progress is being made in the erection of a new bridge at Gweebarra, County Donegal; and, if not, what steps he proposes to take to expedite the work.

I am aware that the progress made up to the present in the erection of a new bridge at Gweebarra, County Donegal, has not reached expectations. The onus of ensuring that the work is completed in an expeditious manner rests on the Donegal County Council, who inform me that their officers recently held a conference with the contractors on the subject, as a result of which the contractors undertook to provide new plant and make other arrangements to expedite the work. Progress in the work will continue to be kept under observation by my Department.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary state how many conferences have been held and how many times have they undertaken to reply and have not replied?

One, that I am aware of. As I suggested in the reply, the responsibility devolves on the Donegal County Council to make sure that the contractors carry out the work.

As a number of the experts on this particular construction are nationals of Holland, the locals may find themselves speaking a language in a very short time which even the Irish do not know.
