Vol. 124 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Establishing Industries at Dingle.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether representations have been made to his Department through the Industrial Development Authority, or otherwise, relative to the establishment of suitable industries at Dingle, County Kerry, with particular reference to phormium tenax, for which there is a tradition in the locality; and, if so, whether the matter has been considered and with what result.

Representations about the establishment of suitable industries have been received by the Industrial Development Authority from the Dingle Development Committee. The committee have been asked to make a local survey for the purpose of assembling data to indicate the facilities that would be available for the establishment of an industry in the district. The possibilities of phormium tenax have been considered by the Department of Agriculture and by a firm engaged in the manufacture of ropes and twines, but the results do not indicate that an industry could be established economically on the basis of this material.
