Vol. 124 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supplies of Foundry Coke.

andMr. McGrath asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that supplies of foundry coke in the country have become so depleted that the employment of foundry workers is seriously jeopardised and that in the Cork foundry, where 30 workers are employed, there are only two weeks' supply of coke, with little prospects of replenishment; and, if so, if he will indicate the steps he has taken, or proposes to take, to ensure the availability of adequate coke supplies, and to ensure the continued employment of foundry workers.

I am aware of the present shortage of foundry coke which affects not only the Cork foundry referred to by the Deputy but other foundries as well. Every possible step has been taken, and will be taken, to get further supplies for this country. I might, however, remind the Deputy that there is a world shortage of this fuel, and that continuing difficulties may be expected.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary ensure that there will be an equal distribution whenever coke is available and will he see that the small foundries will get their share as well as the big foundries?

I will have the Deputy's supplementary question considered.
