Vol. 124 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turf Bogs.

asked the Minister for Local Government if the Government will subsidise county councils who make bogs available for private applicants who want to cut turf and if he will make arrangements to have roads leading to such bogs put into proper repair.

Local authorities who acquire bogs under the terms of Emergency Powers (No. 310) Order, 1944, should be in a position to make bogs available to private applicants at reasonable charges without loss to themselves. Local authorities have already been encouraged to carry out any necessary development works including road repairs in such bogs, and have been notified that bog drainage and repairs to bog roads affected by the flooding or subsidence may be financed from the grants allocated for works under the Local Authorities (Works) Act and that other bog-road repairs and the making of new roads on the bogs in question will, subject to the approval of the Dáil, be financed from a special grant provision in the coming year.
