Vol. 124 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building of Fishing Boats.

Mr. Brady

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state how many fishing boats of the trawler class have been built for the Irish Sea Fisheries Association during each of the years 1948, 1949 and 1950 and up to the latest date in 1951, giving the number and class built (a) in their own yard at Killybegs; (b) in other Irish yards, and (c) in yards outside the State, giving the approximate price in each case.

It is assumed that the Deputy refers to the 50-foot type of fishing boat at present being provided for members by the association. The number of such boats built for the association since 1948 is as follows:—

The price of a 50-foot fishing boat depends on the lay-out, the materials used, the equipment installed and labour factors such as the conditions of wages. It is not possible accordingly to give a comparable figure of cost for each boat, but it can be stated that the cost of building and equipping the 50-foot boats obtained to date ranged, between £4,300 and £5,000 per boat.
