Vol. 124 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Beef Prices.

asked the Minister for Defence whether fresh beef can be purchased by serving Army personnel from Army supplies and if he will state the average prices charged per pound during the month of January, 1951, for (a) rib steak, (b) round steak, (c) sirloin steak, (d) leg beef, (e) stewing beef, (f) rib roast, (g) rolled beef, and (h) sirloin roast.

Beef may be issued on repayment to all ranks in the Curragh direct from the military abattoir and in Dublin to officers through their respective messes. The aggregate quantity issued each week must not exceed the Army ration having regard to the number in each household or mess.

For the purpose of these sales, there is a limited Army classification of cuts which do not, however, coincide with the particular classifications stated in the Deputy's question. I am unable, therefore, to give a categorical reply to the question, but the following are the prices charged according to the Army classification during the month of January in respect of the cuts which appear to approximate to most of those specified:—Rib, sirloin and Kidney, 2/-; round, 1/11; leg, 1/6.
