Vol. 124 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Aran Island Transport Service.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the Galway Bay Steamship Company's service between Galway City and the Aran Islands has again been suspended; and, if so, whether he will indicate the action, if any, he proposes to take to provide the islanders with a satisfactory transport service.

A communication from the Galway Bay Steamboat Company was received in my Department on 26th February indicating that in view of their financial position they had decided to give notice to the crew of the s.s "Dun Aengus" terminating their employment on the 2nd March. On 3rd March a payment of £500 was made to the company to secure the continuation of the service.

Steps are being taken to complete arrangements for the future operation of the service.

Could the Minister say the present position of the proposal to transfer the service to the management and control of Córas Iompair Éireann?

The Deputy's question refers to the supply to the island and the continuation of the service. We are continuing the service of the "Dun Aengus". The question of ownership and transfer is a legal one and it is sub judice.
