Vol. 124 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Relief of Congestion.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether he is aware that congestion and the rundale system exist in the townland of Garryhill, Bohola, County Mayo; and, if so, whether the Land Commission will try to relieve this problem as soon as possible.

I presume the Deputy is referring to congestion generally in the Bohola area where a considerable number of holdings need enlargement, rearrangement or other improvement. The Land Commission have already taken over several holdings comprising some 200 acres in the district and are arranging to take possession of a further holding of 71 acres in a week or two. Proceedings are in hands for the acquisition of not less than 12 further holdings ranging in size from nine acres to 77 acres, all of which will facilitate rearrangement. The proceedings in some of these cases are in the early stages while in the others possession will be taken as early as possible.

Lands which have been taken over for rearrangement will be let, having regard to local requirements, pending a final settlement of the area.
