Vol. 124 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bacon Prices.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in view of attempts being made by bacon curers to increase the price of bacon to retailers by selling ribless, hamless sides, he will make a statement to the Dáil setting out his policy with regard to the bacon-curing industry, and if he will state whether he has given any consideration to the possibility of nationalising this industry in the event of the curers acting in a manner calculated to increase the cost of an essential commodity such as bacon to the public.

As the position in regard to bacon prices is, I understand, at present under consideration by the appropriate authority, I do not consider that this would be an appropriate time for me to make a statement as suggested by the Deputy.

Will the Minister have any objection to making a statement within the next three weeks?

I propose to do more than that.
